At the heart of the European HIKE project, an initiative that promotes hiking as a tool for wellbeing and personal development, are two workshops dedicated to the participants’ psycho-physical well-being. These workshops, which will take place during outdoor weekends in Italy, Greece, and Turkey, offer a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of these locations and delve into topics related to health, physical preparation, and safety during outdoor activities.
Central to these workshops are two fundamental themes for anyone interested in hiking: physical preparation and safety along the trail. Hiking guides, trekking experts, doctors, nutritionists, and travel bloggers will take turns in sessions to offer practical advice and effective strategies for making the most of an outdoor activity lasting one or more days. The workshops will be an integral part of the hikes scheduled for September in Puglia, which will officially open the calendar of walks planned by the project along the Via Francigena in Italy, the Via Egnatia in Greece, and the Via della Tolleranza in Turkey.
Specifically, the first weekend of hikes in Puglia will see participants walking the stages between Bari and Monopoli. The event will kick off on Thursday, September 12 at 5 PM at the University of Bari with a workshop dedicated to physical preparation for hiking, during which topics such as pre-hike training, the importance of endurance and muscle strength, and specific stretching techniques to prevent injuries will be addressed. Additionally, nutrition experts will offer advice on how to properly fuel yourself before, during, and after physical activity, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet to maintain energy and focus during the hike.
During the second weekend in Puglia, participants will tackle on foot and by bicycle the stages of the Via Francigena that connect Torre Canne (Fasano) to Brindisi. Upon arrival, on Sunday, September 29, a workshop dedicated to hiking safety will be held at the Conference Hall of the Accademia degli Erranti. This critically important topic will be discussed by trekking and hiking experts, who will provide valuable advice on selecting the correct equipment, understanding the terrain, and techniques for orientation and risk management. Furthermore, tips will be offered on how to handle unfavorable weather conditions and manage emergencies.
The HIKE project is not just a hiking experience but a true journey of discovery that integrates sports, cultural, and educational activities. The program includes hikes along historical trails and breathtaking landscapes, as well as moments of discussion with health and outdoor experts. These sessions are designed to offer participants comprehensive preparation that goes beyond simple trekking, emphasizing the importance of a healthy and conscious lifestyle.
Participation in the workshops, as well as in the hikes and activities scheduled in the calendar, is free with mandatory registration. Still, places are limited: don’t miss the opportunity to join us in (re)discovering Puglia at a slow pace!
