Hiking through nature in the Italian Murgia

On 27 October 2024, a group of nature enthusiasts, inspired by the  HIKE methodology, explored the stunning Canale di Pirro, an expansive karst basin located in the heart of Murgia (Apulia region, Italy). Following up on HIKE activities conducted in Apulia in September, this adventure was organized to encourage a shared and mindful rediscovery of natural landscapes.

14 hikers embarked on a scenic 10 km walk through the beautiful Selva di Fasano, traversing the side and bed of two ravines. Along the way, the group safely explored several karst caves, once used as shelters.

One of the most memorable moments was a stop at a panoramic viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of the impressive Canale di Pirro (also known as the Canale delle Pile). From this vantage point, the group could spot the characteristic towns of Locorotondo and Alberobello in the distance, whose unmistakable architecture added a magical touch to the scenery.

The experienced team of the “Itineranti di Bari”, which has been promoting outdoor activities since 2018, and the Enopolio Daunio Cultural Hub, which supports slow tourism by offering rest stops and accommodations for travelers on the Via Francigena, assured the hike’s safety.
