HIKE takes the Spotlight at the Rural Lab in Brussels

HIKE achievements and methodology were showcased in Brussels at the Rural Lab event “Enhancing policy coordination for vibrant rural areas: Learning from experience to build a sustainable rural future” organised by the European Commission’s Rural Pact Support Office on 28 November 2024.

The event, bringing together over 100 participants, was focused on exploring strategies for enhancing institutional, governance, and funding support for rural development. It facilitated the exchange of ideas among policymakers and stakeholders, improving access to information on rural policy tools, and developing actionable recommendations for future EU rural policies, ensuring sustainable and vibrant rural areas.

This intense day began with high-level speakers from the European Commission DG REGIO, Rural Pact Support Office, OECD – Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Research Center for Agricultural Policies and Bioeconomy, followed by representatives from all over Europe, presenting various aspects of rural development from education to digitalization, productivity, health, emerging trends related to remote working and a shift toward a green economy.

The European Association of the Via Francigena (EAVF) showcased how European projects such as HIKE contribute to rural revitalisation and economic development, promoting personal well-being and social cohesion. HIKE served as a model for integrated rural strategies by combining cultural, environmental, and health benefits.

Thanks to a series of sports and cultural activities held in September, October, and November 2024, more than 500 people benefited the events organized by project partners along the Via Francigena in Puglia,  the Via Egnatia in Greece and the Tolerance Way in Turkey, improving their health, keeping fit and getting to know the local heritage and walking routes.

This Policy Action Lab provided valuable insights into shaping sustainable futures for Europe’s rural areas, highlighting the importance of various initiatives like HIKE in fostering vibrant communities.
