While we are preparing HIKE4ALL walks along the Camino Lebaniego on 25–26 September 2026 in Cantabria, Spain, celebrating the European Week of Sport, an inspiring inclusive hiking experience has recently taken place on this historic route.
From 29 April to 2 May 2026, the association Zancadas sobre Ruedas completed the full 72 km of the Camino Lebaniego, from San Vicente de la Barquera, the starting point of the route, to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana.
“Zancadas sobre Ruedas” is an association from south-eastern Spain that is strongly committed to inclusion, accessibility and adapted sport. Despite the physical challenges of the route, the group decided to complete the entire Camino Lebaniego, proving that pilgrimage and mountain experiences can become more accessible when shared through cooperation, solidarity and the right support tools.
A total of 18 people took part in the walk: six participants with disabilities and twelve volunteers. To complete the route, the group used adapted Joëlette wheelchairs, allowing people with reduced mobility to actively participate in a mountain and pilgrimage experience. During the stages, participants crossed several emblematic places in Liébana and received recognition from pilgrims, local communities and institutional representatives. Through this action, Zancadas sobre Ruedas continues to promote its motto: “If I get there, you get there”, strengthening its role as a national reference in inclusive sport, accessibility and social participation.
This inspiring experience marks an important step on the way to the upcoming HIKE4ALL walks in Cantabria, which will further promote the values of inclusion, accessibility and participation during the European Week of Sport. Also, it highlighted the importance of continuing to work towards natural spaces and tourism experiences that are accessible to everyone.
