From La Storta to the Heart of Rome: HIKE arrives to Vatican

On 17 December 2024, the walk from Siena to Rome organised by the Municipality of Siena in collaboration with the DMO Terre di Siena, Legambiente and the Gruppo Trekking Senese reached its grand finale as participants arrived to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

The 13-stage journey under the patronage of the European Association of Via Francigena Ways (EAVF) was a true celebration of slow tourism, cultural heritage and long-distance walking. Participants, lead by Vanna Giunti, Siena Councilor for tourism and the UNESCO site, together with local enthusiasts and members of trekking associations undertook 280 kilometres from Siena.

The final 19.1-kilometer stretch to the Vatican, also served as a platform for disseminating the methodology of the European HIKE project. Representatives from the European Association of Via Francigena Ways, involved in the HIKE project, actively participated in the walk, engaging with fellow walkers to discuss the project’s numerous benefits. HIKE, which promotes hiking as a tool for well-being and physical development, was presented to participants along the route.

THE EAVF team also shared insights into the project, emphasizing its role in fostering mindfulness, physical health, and cultural appreciation. Informational materials were distributed, and discussions highlighted the project’s alignment with the principles of sustainable and enriching travel experiences.

This collaborative initiative demonstrated the strength of partnerships between local authorities, cultural organizations, and European projects, creating an impactful blend of tradition and innovation that will inspire future endeavours along the Via Francigena.
